Determining if your Macintosh has Ethernet and/or a modem installed

  1. You need to ensure that the AppleTalk control panel is configured properly. To do this, in the Apple menu Apple Menu, select Control Panels, and then select the AppleTalk control panel. In the AppleTalk control panel window, in the pull-down list beside Connect via, select "Ethernet" if it appears in the list. Close the AppleTalk control panel window, saving any changes.

  2. Start the Apple System Profiler (as explained above).

  3. Click the System Profile tab at the top of the Apple System Profiler window.

  4. Click the blue triangle MacBlueTri beside the Network overview heading.

  5. If your Macintosh has Ethernet installed you will see "Ethernet" listed directly under the Network overview heading.

  6. If your computer has a dial-up modem installed, you will see "Modem" listed directly beneath the Ethernet information (or directly under the Network overview heading if you don't have Ethernet installed).

Note: With Mac OS X, in some cases, your modem may be listed as a "PointToPoint" device instead. This is a bug with the Apple System Profiler on Mac OS X, and does not indicate that anything is wrong with your modem.
